The American Chesapeake Club’s Judge and Breeder Education Committee develops educational resources and facilitates learning opportunities for American Kennel Club conformation judges and breeders. The JBEC also approves Breed Mentors and oversees our Breed Mentor program. Announcements about seminars and other learning opportunities will be posted here. Resources

All study of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever must begin with a careful reading of the American Chesapeake Club’s official Breed Standard. Fanciers first formally defined the breed in writing in 1877. The first recognized breed standard was approved in 1918 when the American Chesapeake Club was approved as the American Kennel Club Parent Club for the breed. Our current standard was approved in 1993.

Further discussion of the standard appears in the 2012 Illustrated Guide to the Chesapeake Bay Retriever that was later revised in 2018.

Breed Mentors

Breed mentors are highly knowledgeable breeders who are approved by the ACC Board of Directors to mentor breeders in addition to both prospective and active conformation judges about all aspects of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.
